What is LIHEAP energy assistance?

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program is a federally funded program that helps low-income families pay their energy bills and weatherproof their homes. The program authorizes some energy-related minor home repairs as well.
Assistance with energy costs related to heating and cooling is available in every state, but states individually decide whether or not to provide weatherproofing and repair assistance.
The income threshold required to qualify for the program depends on family size. People who receive other forms of government assistance such as Supplemental Security Income or the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program may be automatically eligible for energy assistance.
