Are lipids water soluble?

Lipids are not water soluble. They are substances, such as fat, oil or wax, that are soluble in nonpolar organic solvents, such as alcohol. Lipids are organic compounds that contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.

Lipids commonly found in the human body include triglycerides, cholesterol, phospholipids and non-esterified fatty acids. They are used to maintain the structure of plant and animal cells and create energy in the body, and are metabolized into hormones that are vital to bodily function.
