While new techniques make liposuction relatively safe as of 2014, according to WebMD, procedures have risks ranging from common and minor to extreme and complicated. Though rare, deaths have occurred from liposuction. People who are obese or struggling with major health concerns are more at risk.
Excessive blood loss, shock, fat or blood clots, cavity punctures, toxic reactions and infections are among the more severe risks with liposuction, reports WebMD. Swelling, soreness, numbness, scarring and irritation are more common risks. Nerve and skin damage are also possible due to heat used in procedures. People who have adverse reactions to anesthesia may face additional risks.
