According to National Geographic, Bengal tigers have an average lifespan of eight to 10 years in the wild. In captivity they have a lifespan of up to 18 years.
Tigers are the largest species of the cat family, and Bengal tigers make up the largest number of tigers in the wild. Nearly half of all wild tigers are Bengal tigers. Also known as Indian tigers, Bengal tigers live alone and mark their territories with scent to keep rival tigers away. Their native habitat ranges from the Indian subcontinent to southeast Asia, but their numbers have dropped over the last century from nearly 100,000 to only 2,500 remaining in the wild.
