How long do chameleons live?

Chameleons usually live two to three years in the wild. However, the life span of a captive chameleon can range between three and 10 years. Some species are reported to be capable of living upwards of 20 years.

Larger species of chameleons tend to live longer than smaller species. Gender also influences the life span of a chameleon. To get the most longevity out of a pet chameleon, owners should start with a captive-bred juvenile, and be sure to provide proper lighting, plenty of fresh water and a balanced diet. For example, a male veiled chameleon is an excellent pet for beginners.
