It took 10 years to build the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. Construction began on the bridge in May 1988 and finished in 1998. It opened to the public in April of that year.
The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is the world's longest, tallest and most expensive suspension bridge. It was designed to withstand earthquakes of up to 8.5 on the Richter scale and winds of up to 180 miles per hour. The bridge was built to span the distance between Kobe and the Awaji-shima Island and is 12,831 feet long. Over 1,700 lights illuminate it, and it cost an estimated 500 billion yen to build.
