Christopher Columbus' first voyage across the Atlantic took approximately two months. Christopher Columbus started his voyage in Palos, Spain in early August of 1492 with three ships: the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. He arrived at a Bahamian island he later named San Salvador on October 12, 1492.
Christopher Columbus' crew was not comprised of soldiers, priests or colonists and thus was a purely exploratory expedition. Christopher Columbus and his fellow explorers believed they had landed on outlying islands of Asia. Columbus had hoped to locate the Chinese emperor and thus he explored many parts of the Caribbean.
