Columbus and his crew crossed the Atlantic Ocean in four separate voyages, the first taking about five weeks. In that first voyage, Columbus departed from the Canary Islands on Sept. 6,1492, and sighted land on Oct. 12, 1492. Columbus named the island San Salvador.

The colony Columbus founded, Hispaniola, turned out to be such a corrupt disaster that he was arrested and returned to Spain in chains after his third voyage. Columbus and his brothers were reported to have used torture and mutilation to maintain control in Hispaniola.

The actual distance from the Canary Islands to the Bahamas is 5,424 miles.
