How long do giant African snails live?

The average giant African snail lives from 3 to 5 years, though some are known to survive as long as 9 years. Predators posing the biggest threat include the coconut crab, hermit crab, domesticated and wild birds, and wild pigs.

The species thrives in humid, tropical climates and is most commonly found throughout Africa, the Indian Ocean islands, Australia, New Zealand and South America. Because its diet consists of 500 different plant species, farmers consider the snail a pest and take measures to eradicate it. Giant in its name refers to the large shell, which may reach up to 10 or 11 inches in length in adult snails.
