The symptoms of molluscum contagiosum usually last between six months and a year and can persist as long as five years, according to Mayo Clinic. However, if the characteristic bumps on the skin become troublesome for the patient, they can be removed by a dermatologist.
Some medical professionals believe it best to remove the bumps before they fade away, according to Mayo Clinic. This is because, as its name suggests, the condition is very contagious. The bumps can be removed by scraping them off the skin or through cryotherapy or laser therapy. Topical anesthesia needs to be applied during these treatments. Other treatments are topical and cause the bump to dissolve or even fall off the skin.
