Who was the lowest-seeded team to win the NCAA men's tournament?

In 1985, eighth-seeded Villanova became the lowest-seeded team ever to win the NCAA men's basketball championship. As of February 2015, they are still the lowest-seeded team to claim the title. In general, lower-seeded teams tend to not perform as well during March Madness as the higher seeds do.
Historically, a No. 16 seed has never defeated a No. 1 seed during the tournament. Additionally, No. 1 seeds tend to have the best chance of making it to the Final Four; since 1979, there have only been a few years when no No. 1 seeds have made it that far. On three occasions, a No. 11 seed advanced to the Final Four.
