It is also the lowest temperature ever recorded in North America, though on Jan. 23, 1971, Prospect Creek, Alaska recorded a low of minus 62 degrees Celsius. Worldwide, the coldest temperature ever recorded occurred on July 21, 1983, at Vostok Station, Antarctica, when the temperature went down to minus 89 degrees Celsius. Vostok Station is a Russian research station located near the geomagnetic South Pole. Its average annual temperature during the cold season is about minus 65 degrees Celsius, making it officially the coldest place on Earth.
