The Tri-State Tornado is the deadliest twister on record, with 695 deaths attributed to it. The tornado passed through Illinois, Indiana and Missouri. Approximately 13,000 people were injured in the twister, which caused $17 million in property damage.
The Tri-State Tornado struck the three states on March 18, 1925. Most of the deaths occurred in southern Illinois. It traveled 219 miles and at speeds of over 70 mph. Griffin, Ill. was completely destroyed by the tornado.
The tornado lasted over three hours. Since there was no warning system in place, most people were caught by surprise when the tornado hit.
