As of 2015, Starbucks' two biggest competitors are McDonald's and Dunkin' Donuts. However, Starbucks global sales have continued to rise faster than both Dunkin' Donuts and McDonald's combined.
In 2002, Dunkin' Donuts began offering espresso beverages. The company partnered with Proctor & Gamble to sell its coffee in grocery outlets. Dunkin' Donuts then tripled the number of stores by 2015.
In 2009, McDonald's began offering premium coffee at a cheaper price than Starbucks. It was this decision that began what was called the "Coffee Wars." In September 2014, McDonald's announced plans to offer its coffee beans inside grocery stores alongside Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts.
