The main purpose of the executive branch is to be sure the laws of the nation are followed and that the responsibilities of government are fulfilled. The executive branch consists of the President, Vice President and Cabinet members.
As the head of the executive branch, the President of the United States is the head of state and the Commander-in-Chief of the military. He is ultimately responsible for the actions of the executive branch. The collection of taxes, national security and foreign relations are among the duties of this branch of government. The President also nominates federal judges and Supreme Court justices, and he has veto power over the legislation Congress passes.
