According to ProCon.org, the Province of New York was officially Christian with the British allowing all forms of Protestantism in 1664. In 1697, Trinity Church was established in New York City.
Although both the Dutch and the British rule were officially Protestant, people of all faiths were socially tolerated. No one religion dominated the area, which allowed Lutherans, Jews, Quakers, Catholics and many other denominations to flourish. In addition, New York City's skyline became more congested throughout the 18th century due to the city's increase of churches. Government-sanctioned religion in New York ended in 1846 when the New York state constitution was amended.
