When making an Afghan stitch, use a hook with a cap at the end to hold the foundation stitches in place. Begin with a chain of 16 stitches that acts as the foundation.

Insert the hook into the second chain, then yarn over and draw the yarn through the chain stitch. Repeat for each stitch in the foundation.

Yarn over the hook and draw the yarn through one loop, then yarn over and draw through the next two loops. Repeat this step until only one loop remains on the hook; the first row of Afghan stitching is now complete.

To complete the swatch, slip stitch under each bar on the final row. This removes any gaps from between the stitches.
