How do you make kinetic sand?

Make kinetic sand by purchasing clean sand, then mixing it with cornstarch, dish soap and water. Mix thoroughly until all the sand is dampened. Store in an airtight container.

1. Purchase or find the necessary ingredients

   This recipe calls for 50 pounds of sand, 6 cups of cornstarch, a few tablespoons of dish soap, and water as needed. For smaller amounts of sand, adjust the ingredients proportionately.

2. Obtain appropriate containers for mixing and storage

   For this much kinetic sand, a 28-quart storage bin with a lid is appropriate. If desired, you may store the sand in multiple smaller containers

3. Empty the sand into the mixing container

   For this large bag of sand, set it into the bin and slit the bottom. Remove the bag, and spread the sand evenly to make mixing easier.

4. Add the cornstarch

   Mix all the cornstarch evenly into the sand.Use your hands, a spoon or even a trowel if desired. The cornstarch is mixed adequately when there are no visible clumps of white.

5. Add the water and dish soap to the sand

   The amount of water necessary varies depending on humidity. Start with just a tablespoon of water and a tablespoon of dish soap as the amount of water necessary is minimal. Add the water to the sand, and mix with your hands. Add more water and dish soap until the sand is barely damp and the sand can be molded and hold its shape. If the sand gets too dry with use, add more water.
