How do you make your teeth white?

To make teeth whiter, try whitening toothpaste, bleaching, professional dental treatments, prevention and maintenance, states WebMD. While nothing can change the base color of the enamel, whitening methods may remove stains and other discolorations.

Some whitening products are available over the counter while others are only available through a dentist. Keep in mind that not all treatments work on everybody.

1. Brush with whitening toothpaste
As stated by the National Science Teachers Association, these toothpastes do not contain bleach. Rather, they have abrasives and other agents to remove stains so teeth appear whiter.
2. Use a bleaching treatment
Bleaching kits can be purchased over the counter. The kits contain a concentration of about 3 percent hydrogen peroxide which bleaches the teeth, according to the NSTA.
3. Get professional help
WebMD states many dentists offer bleaching treatments in the office. The solutions are usually stronger than what is available over the counter. Lasers are often used in conjunction with the bleaching solution.
4. Practice prevention and maintenance
Cut back on food and drink that tend to discolor teeth. According to WebMD, some examples are blueberries, blackberries, beets, red wine and coffee. Medications like antibiotics may discolor teeth as does smoking. Good dental hygiene is important in preventing yellowing or discoloration of tooth enamel. Brush teeth twice a day, especially after eating or drinking foods that may stain teeth.
