What is the Make-A-Wish Foundation?

The Make-a-Wish Foundation is a non-profit organization that grants the wishes of children who have life-threatening illnesses. Granted wishes include family vacations, video game systems and days spent with childhood heroes.
Children ages 2 1/2 through 17 are eligible for the program, and they must have a referral from a parent, guardian, family member or medical professional. The foundation contacts each child's doctor to determine if the medical condition qualifies the child for consideration. The foundation annually grants wishes for about 14,000 children, which it estimates is about half the number of children diagnosed with a life-threatening condition each year.
