Also known as the jaguar or Aztec cichlid, the managuense cichlid is a species of fish native to Central America. It is used as a food fish and is sold for aquariums.
Managuense cichlids are popular for their beautiful coloring. Adult fish have black blotches similar to those of a jaguar on a pearly background with a purplish cast. Males are more brightly colored than females. Managuense cichlids are predatory and territorial and are best kept by themselves as breeding pairs. They need at least a 70-gallon tank for a single adult or a 100-gallon tank for a breeding pair. They eat flake food, cichlid pellets and most prepared and frozen fish foods.
