National Guardian Life Insurance Company, or NGL, was organized in 1909 in Madison, Wisconsin, the company's website notes. The company sold its first policy on October 11, 1910. By 1948, NGL had issued policies totaling $100 million, and it had assets of more than $2.5 billion in late 2015.
NGL consistently has been rated one of America's most successful independent mutual life insurance companies, receiving an "A-" rating from the global credit rating agency A.M. Best Company. Since 1999, National Guardian Life also has operated Settlers Life Insurance, which was founded in 1984 and specializes in final-expense whole-life policies, explains NGL.
