Diabetics typically aim for 45 to 60 grams of carbohydrates per meal, but each person's diet plan is unique. No specific amount of carbohydrates are allowed or disallowed for diabetics because no single diet works for every person, according to the American Diabetes Association.
Many people with diabetes choose to count carbohydrates and/or keep track of the glycemic index of the foods they eat because the GI measures how foods that contain carbohydrates raise blood glucose levels. Research shows that not only the amount, but also the type of carbohydrates eaten have an effect on glucose levels, reports the American Diabetes Association.
