How many gold medals does Michael Phelps have?

American Olympic swimmer Michael Fred Phelps II has won 18 gold medals for Olympic swimming events between 2004 and 2012, and a combination of 61 gold medals between the Olympics, World, and Pan-Pacific Championships. He won his first Olympic gold medal in 2004 for the Men's 4x100m Medley Relay.

Phelps has also garnered two bronze medals in the same Olympic year, as well as a pair of silver medals in London's 2012 Olympic games. As of 2014 Phelps is the most decorated Olympian in history and holds the record for all-time Olympic gold medals, including eight from the 2008 Beijing Games alone.
