The Titanic received at least four warnings from other ships about ice in the area on the day of the accident. The final warning came an hour before disaster struck.
A formal inquiry into the accident was conducted by the United States Senate. The final report found that the captain of the Titanic received at least three warnings directly mentioning icebergs in the area and a fourth mentioning that a nearby vessel was stuck in ice. The first of the warnings placed icebergs within five miles of the Titanic's path, and it originated from a location near the site of the accident.
