How many Jews were sent to Auschwitz?

According to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum, approximately 1,100,000 Jews were transported to Auschwitz between 1940 and 1945. Jews made up about 85 percent of those who passed through the camp, and 90 percent of the prisoners who died there.
In all, as many as 1,500,000 prisoners may have died in the death camp, including Jews, ethnic Russians and Poles, Gypsies and others the Germans classified as undesirables. Unfortunately, records were poorly kept as the executions increased in frequency, especially towards the end of the war. As a result, the true scale of the atrocity is difficult to determine. When the Russians liberated the camp in 1945, only around 60,000 survivors remained.
