As of July 2015, 25.8 million people in sub-Saharan African have HIV, according to the Foundation for AIDS Research. This figure represents 70 percent of all HIV cases worldwide. Additionally, around 240,000 people have HIV across North Africa and the Middle East.
Sub-Saharan Africa is home to nearly 90 percent of all cases of childhood HIV, claims amfAR. Moreover, in 2014, 790,000 people in sub-Saharan Africa died as a result of AIDS. This figure represents two-thirds of all AIDS-related deaths worldwide in 2014. Of the estimated 2 million people infected with HIV worldwide in 2014, 1.4 million live in sub-Saharan Africa, with an additional 22,000 in North Africa and the Middle East.
