How many people live in South Africa?

Based on the 2011 census held in South Africa, more than 52 million people reside in the country. Africans made up the majority of the population, with 79.2 percent and a total of over 41 million citizens.

English ranks as the fourth most-common language spoken in South Africa. According to a national census recorded earlier in 2001, Christianity was the most widespread religion in the country. The Muslim, Hindu and Jewish religions account for just a small percentage of South Africans.
