How many Pokemon are there?

Currently, as of the sixth generation of Pokémon games in 2014, there are 719 known Pokémon. The number of Pokémon, however, is always growing, as more are constantly being discovered.

Many Pokémon make their homes in natural habitats along routes that run through the regions of the Pokémon world, which can be either on land or in the ocean. However, some Pokémon are native to urban centers. Despite being much more powerful than typical animals, Pokémon are not immortal and go through the cycle of life and death. The most powerful of Pokémon pass into history, and are given the distinction of being legendary Pokémon, of which there are 52, as of 2014.
