There are a total of 50 states and a single federal district that make up the United States of America. Originally, the United States was made up of 13 colonies.
The United States flag features 13 stripes, which signify the 13 original colonies that fought for independence against the British colonizers. The flag also features 50 stars that signify the total number of states admitted to the union to date. The U.S. ratified its constitution in June 21, 1788, making it a sovereign country. Hawaii was the last state to be admitted into the United States, on August 21, 1959.
