How many teeth do children have?

By the time children have all of their baby teeth, they should have a total of 20. Children start to get their baby teeth at around 6 months of age.

Babies begin developing teeth even before they are born. These teeth start dropping down before the end of the first year. They take up the space that adult teeth occupy later in life, but the baby teeth have no roots. As the adult teeth start sliding into place, they push the baby teeth out of the way. Though children end up with 10 teeth on the bottom jaw as well as 10 teeth on the top jaw, these eventually give way to 32 adult teeth.
