What is a map marker?

A map marker is a symbol used to mark a point on a map. There is no universal symbol for map markers. They can be virtually any symbol or design selected by either the map maker or the person marking the map.
For Web-based maps, some sort of point indicator is usually used as a map marker. For physical maps that are hung on walls in a classroom, push pins are common map markers. Items marked on maps can include places of interest, the locations of specific types of establishments, such as restaurants or retail shops, or landmarks on a journey.
