A high PSA score can indicate a risk for prostate cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute. PSA is a certain type of protein produced by the prostate gland.

Doctors measure the level of PSA to determine the man's risk for prostate cancer. Some even order it as a regular screening or to monitor the level after a person has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The normal level of PSA is 4 ng/ml or lower. The higher the level is, the higher the risk of cancer. Even when a high PSA is present, other tests are used to determine if cancer is present.
