What does a high PSA level mean?

A high prostate-specific antigen level may indicate prostate cancer, prostatitis or an enlarged prostate, according to WebMD. A level of 4 ng/ml or higher is considered high.
A PSA level below 4 ng/ml doesn't guarantee the absence of prostate cancer; men with any PSA level can have prostate cancer, states WebMD. If a doctor is concerned about a patient's high PSA level, a biopsy is taken to determine if cancer is present. Men between ages 55 and 69 have the highest risk of prostate cancer, but men can begin discussing testing with their doctors at age 40 if other risk factors are present.
