What does it mean when your sweat or urine smells like ammonia?

Urine containing a low level of water can smell like ammonia, according to Mayo Clinic. It can also be a sign of infection or urinary stones, WebMD adds. Sweat that smells like ammonia may be a sign of too much protein and too little carbohydrates in the diet, says HowStuffWorks.
If the ammonia odor is due to a high concentration of waste products and a low level of water in the urine, drinking more water can dilute the urine and get rid of the smell. If the odor persists, an infection or a more serious condition may be causing it. Increasing carbohydrate intake, cutting back on protein and drinking more water can help to get rid of an ammonia smell in sweat, according to HowStuffWorks.
