Why do menopausal women need bone mineral density testing?

Menopausal women need bone mineral density testing because there is a direct relationship between the lack of estrogen that results from menopause and osteoporosis. Since symptoms of osteoporosis may not be detected until there is significant bone loss, regular bone testing for women at risk is recommended, according to WebMD.

Osteoporosis, which literally means “porous bone,” results in increased loss of bone mass and strength, states Cleveland Clinic. The disease often progresses with no symptoms or pain and often remains undiscovered until weakened bones cause painful bone fractures, normally in the back or hips. Treatment for osteoporosis may include calcium and vitamin D supplements, medication, estrogen therapy, weight-bearing exercises, and injectable teriparatide, a bone-building agent.
