A miniature Great Dane is simply a Great Dane that is smaller than average. The American Kennel Club and the Great Dane Club of America both recognize only one type of Great Dane, a dog standing a minimum of 30 inches high in males and 28 inches high in females.
The Great Dane is a giant breed originally bred for hunting wild boar. It has also been used as a watchdog, for tracking and for pulling carts. Dogs of a similar type appear on 5,000-year-old Egyptian monuments. Large size is characteristic of the breed, and larger dogs receive preference in the show ring over smaller dogs of equal conformation. Dogs standing shorter than the required height are automatically disqualified.
