What is a Mizpah coin?

A Mizpah coin is a coin that can be separated into two and has the words of Genesis 31:49 inscribed on it. Genesis 31:49 says, "The Lord watch between me and thee while we are absent from one another."
Mizpah coins are used for pledges between couples during the Coin and Covenant ceremonies. This type of ceremony is common for those who are in the military and about to be separated from their spouse due to deployment. One half of the coin is taken by the husband and the other by the wife, symbolizing the emotional bond between the two. When they are reunited, the coins are joined together.
