EDTA, or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, has a molecular weight of 292.24 daltons. This compound is found in prescription medications that can be administered by either intravenous or intramuscular injection. It is also known by the brand name Endrate in medicine.
EDTA is used in the medical field for a variety of conditions. This compound is a chelator that preferentially binds metals, such as iron and copper, in the body. This is useful in cases of metal poisoning, or in certain health conditions such as Wilson's Disease, where patients produce an excess of copper, which can cause harmful effects in the body.
