BSA, or bovine serum albumin, has a molecular weight of 66 kilodaltons. BSA is a serum albumin protein that is derived from cows. This protein is utilized in research laboratories as a protein concentration standard.
BSA is comprised of 583 amino acids with an 18 residue signal peptide at its N-terminal. Its pH is between 5.2 and 7, which makes it an acidic compound. The albumin protein has numerous applications in research labs and is often used in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, immunoblots, and immunohistochemistry experiments. It is also used to stabilize enzymes during DNA digestion to prevent DNA fragments from sticking to test tubes, pipet tips and other vessels.
