What do moles typically eat?

Moles are carnivores. They feed on earthworms and small insects such as lawn grubs or larvae. They may even eat mice. Each day, a mole eats 50 to 100 percent of its own body weight. In a year, a mole eats a total of about 40 pounds of worms.
Moles have a toxin in their saliva that paralyzes worms, allowing them to kill the worms immediately or store them to eat later. Moles sometimes eat nuts as well. They are unlikely to feed on garden plants, but they are considered pests because their tunnels may disturb soil and damage plant roots.
