What is the Molisch test?
By Forinfos - 08/11/2025 - 0 comments
The Molisch test is used to detect carbohydrates. The test can also be used to identify compounds that can be dehydrated to furfural in the presence of sulfuric acid.
The Molisch test is performed by combining a small reagent with the test solution in a test tube. Sulfuric acid is added slowly to the slightly tilted tube. The mixture will form a layer without further mixing. If the layer is purple, the test is positive for the presence of carbohydrates. If a green color appears, the test is negative.
The test is named after botanist Hans Molisch, a professor at the German University of Prague.
