Is moss a fungus?

Moss is not a fungus, although many people believe that it is. It is a plant with more than 12,000 species around the world.

Moss are land plants that bear spores. They can be found all around the world; everywhere except in saltwater.

Moss plants are typically found in shady and moist areas, such as the bottom of a forest floor. They can grow to be as large as 40 inches long. They provide a number of benefits to the environment, including soil-erosion control and contributing to the water and nutrient economy of nature.

There are some algae and lichens that are mistaken for moss because they have a similar appearance. Irish moss is actually red algae while Spanish moss is a famous name for a lichen.
