What is Mount Mayon?

Mount Mayon, also known as Mayon Volcano, is an active volcano located in the southeast of the Filipino island of Luzon. The volcano has a height of 8,077 feet and a base that is 80 miles in circumference.

Mount Mayon has erupted more than 30 times since 1616, with eruptions in 2000 and 2006 forcing tens of thousands of people from their homes in several villages closely proximate to the volcano. An eruption that took place in 1993 led to the deaths of 79 people, but the most destructive eruption of the volcano occurred in 1814. Mount Mayon remains a popular destination for campers and mountain climbers.
