Where do mountain lions sleep?

The mountain lion is adaptable to many environments and can be found in low-lying swamps or on high mountain slopes. They do not build dens, preferring to sleep and rest in caves or dense brush.

The mountain lion used to live throughout the United States but was almost hunted into extinction by 1900. As of 2014, they can be found primarily throughout the western United States. Mountain lions often follow deer populations — their preferred prey. Coyotes, porcupines and raccoons also become prey for a mountain lion when deer cannot be found. Solitary animals, mountain lions hunt at night across their chosen territory. Males stalk about 100 square miles, and females range through about 30 square miles.
