As of 2015, the average balance of savings for Americans nearing retirement is $100,000, according to U.S. News. However, 45 percent of Americans reach retirement age with no savings at all. Individuals with eight times their final yearly salary in savings are less likely to outlive their savings, states Fidelity.
U.S. News states that retirees should limit their withdrawals from savings to 4 percent of the total per year. For the retiree with $100,000 in savings, this amounts to $4,000 annually, or $333 monthly. When the retiree with no additional income sources adds this to the average Social Security income, his total monthly income is $1,633. Couples with $100,000 in savings average $2,933 per month.
