As of 2014, experienced longshoremen working in U.S. East Coast ports make $35 per hour. Novice workers start at $20 per hour. Include bonuses and benefits, and total compensation rises to $44.20 per hour. Full-time longshoremen average $91,998 per year.

On the West Coast, basic wages are similar to East Coast ports; however, benefits and bonuses may be higher. According to The New York Times, heavy cargo traffic from Asia may account for the higher West Coast wages. West Coast union members, with combined salary and benefits, can make anywhere from $100,000 to $120,000 per year. Additional pay factors for both coasts include longevity in the union and continuing education.
