How much do penguins weigh?

Penguins weigh from 2 to 90 pounds depending on the species of penguin and the stage of the breeding cycle. Little blue penguins, found only near Australia and New Zealand, are the smallest and weigh 2 or 3 pounds.

The emperor penguin, found in the Antarctic, is the largest species of penguin. An emperor penguin stands approximately 36 to 44 inches tall and weighs between 60 and 90 pounds. In mating season, emperor penguins gather in a colony on land and lay one egg per paired couple. Females return to the sea to feed, but the males do not eat and lose weight while incubating the eggs for up to nine weeks.
