Bananas contain around 422 mg of potassium each, which is 13 percent of the recommended daily allowance. Potassium is vital to the human body, as it provides energy to muscles, nerves and brain cells. Potassium can also reduce stroke risk and help reduce blood pressure.
Bananas are not the food with the highest amount of potassium. Sweet potatoes, avocado, white beans, yogurt and spinach all contain more potassium than bananas. A simple baked potato with the skin is brimming with potassium, containing 925 mg of potassium in one serving. Salmon, turkey, beef and eggs are also good choices to eat when adding potassium to a diet.
