The average human mouth produces approximately 2 to 4 pints of saliva a day. Saliva is produced by several major and minor glands located in different areas in the mouth and circulates through tubes known as salivary ducts.
Saliva production is a continuous process, but most is made in the afternoon and less is made at night. Production is also enhanced during chewing or sucking.
Saliva is more than 98 percent water and contains substances that are essential to food digestion. It also helps keep the mouth moist and comfortable, and it fights germs in the mouth and prevents bad breath.
